The "Road Home" Saga Continues

When we woke up the next morning, I was pretty sure the worst was now behind us. In fact, the rest of the drive home was pretty uneventful, until we pulled into the driveway.

Our landlord had, before we left, agreed to remodel our master bathroom shower. Awesome! We'd be out of town and come home to a sweet new shower complete with travertine tile and no more leaky faucet! We were both looking forward to the experience when I opened the garage door and noticed the mess left by the friendly construction crew and their not-so-friendly construction habits. I immediately noticed my tools - yes, *my* tools - laying around the garage covered in plaster, mud, and what not. I was miffed, to say the least and completely distracted.

As I slowly pulled in, checking to make sure I wouldn't run over any of my misplaced tools, I hear a sickening "crunch" on the roof of the car. OH NO! I completely forgot about the roof cargo! I quickly threw the car in reverse and backed out to inspect the damage. Nothing seemed out of place or broken. The car was fine, the rack was fine, the stroller was fine and the garage door was fine (or so I thought). What I hadn't realized was that I had managed to derail the side cables that help lift the garage door. I didn't find out about them until later when I tried to close the door and it wouldn't go down on one side... The cable had managed to wrap itself around the pole and was all tangled up. :~(

On top of that mess, the whole house and my car were covered in tile and sheetrock dust from the construction. The crew hadn't covered anything from what we could tell. Our beds, our carpet, our clothes, chairs, computers, TV, desks - EVERYTHING covered. VERY frustrating after a long, painful trip home. Rachel, in particular was ready to cry. She had worked hard to get the house clean before we left so she wouldn't have to clean when she got home. It was a complete and total disaster. Oh, the shower is great by the way - the one bright spot. :)

Well, we had a cleaning crew come Monday and Michael and Riceli Mordecai helped me fix the garage door (thanks guys!). The landlord was VERY unhappy about the mess and is back-charging the contractor for the damages. Everything's fine now, but man, those last 24 hours of our trip were killer...
