Maui Day 5
With the car loaded (Logan, Autumn, Mom, Ashlyn, & Aubrey pictured) we headed to a Swap Meet in Kahului. We scored some great stuff! I bought a cute pair of "Mother of Pearl" earrings and a black pearl jewelry set for me, a t-shirt and hot cuddlefish for Kurt, an ukulele for Logan, and a cute Hawaiian sun dress for Kelsie. Despite the heat and gravel parking lot (not ideal for pushing an umbrella stroller) we had a lot of fun. For some reason the guys didn't think a morning full of shopping sounded very fun...so they opted for a morning of snorkeling. They headed North of our condo to Honolua Bay. Some people travel to the bay by boat, but the guys found an easy two-minute trail from the highway. The guys met us in Kahului after lunch and as families we parted ways. We were off to Haleakala to view a beautiful sunset, but had a little time to kill. We decided to stop off in the Iao Valley. The valley was very lush and green. At the bottom of the park were Heritage Gardens representing those that have influenced the island. Up the road a little was the actual park and Iao Needle (Rock formation covered with lush green vegetation that is 1,200 feet above the valley floor). We were a little short on time so we didn't have time to hike up for the best view. After a gas and food break, we were on our way to Haleakala (East Maui Volcano). We were told that ideal photography conditions were at sunrise or sunset, but once we figured out that we'd have to leave our condo between 2 and 3am for sunrise, we opted to see the sunset. :) I've been to several different volcanoes, but don't believe I've ever been able to DRIVE to the top of one. We started off at sea level and made it to 10, 023 feet! I'm happy to report despite the long switchbacks up the mountain we didn't have any puking episodes! It was neat to see the changes in vegetation as we drove up the mountain. Also, the change in temperature was a little shocking. Luckily, we were pretty prepared unlike some tourists showing up in shorts and flip flops. Kurt took some amazing shots of the sunset. After he develops them we'll add them to his photo blog. (The bottom picture is a shot I took of him)
