My father was an LDS missionary as a teenager in Southern Texas, I was a missionary in Nagoya Japan, three of my siblings served in Australia, Washington State, and Florida and my youngest brother is currently serving in Roseville, CA (for those counting, that's all of us!). We performed acts of kindness, love, and service to all walks of life, regardless of their beliefs or feelings towards us or the Church. We've taught of Jesus Christ and the sanctity of marriage and the family. Those who know us know neither we nor any representative of our Church would EVER perform an act of violence and/or hate. They also know that we are some of the most level-headed, informed, educated, loving, and fair people they've ever met.
Our Church is no stranger to persecution - we've been through it all: cold-blooded murder at the hands of those who openly persecuted its members, forced from our homes, lynched, even ordered to be destroyed by the government we've fought to protect. We know something of discrimination and would never tolerate it in any form. Knowing this, how could anyone believe we would support anything that is intolerant or unjust? The core to our belief is that tolerating the person does not mean the act or sin must be condoned. This is what Christ taught so eloquently when showing compassion to a woman taken in adultery while telling her to "sin no more".
To suggest that missionaries or members of the church would participate in anything other than standing up for what they believe in is complete slander and lies. We are Christians and we stand with other Christians on this issue - shoulder to shoulder with our brethren and sisters of faith.
Read my blog postings on Proposition 8. Proposition 8 is only about maintaining religious freedoms and rights granted by the US Constitution. Be informed. Don't listen to their slander and lies. The vandalism, theft, slander, libel and anti-Free Speech actions of the No on Proposition 8 supporters should be enough to tell you where the hatred and bigotry lies... Would Christ, Mohammad, Allah, God, Buddha, Martin Luther, Confucius, or any other iconic religious leader act in this way?
There's a new ad for No on Proposition 8 that will be airing on election day 2008. It depicts missionaries invading a lesbian couple's home and behaving, well, as you would expect a No on Proposition 8 supporter to act (see Yes on 8 Sign Theft and Vandalism). Apparently, they have drunk so deeply from the bitter cup of hate and anger that it is all they can think about. Vote Yes on Proposition 8. They can't take away your vote and you shouldn't be deterred by their violence and hate.

Yay for proposition 8! Last week here at BYU we had a great devotional. It was Dr. George from Princton University. He's a Roman Catholic and he articulated what I believe very beautifully. The first part is about government, then he touches on abortion and then spends the last 30 minutes talking about marriage between a man and a woman. It's fantastic: http://speeches.byu.edu/?act=viewitem&id=1809
