Saturday morning Kurt & I are going on our first ever trip by ourselves (except one night we spent in Tahoe by ourselves before Kelsie was born) since having kids! My sister-in-law Anissa (and Noah) agreed to watch our kids to make this trip possible--so a BIG THANK YOU goes out to them!
We have our trip down the central coast planned a couple different times, but deals to Maui & Utah came up that we couldn't turn down. But, now we are finally doing it! Saturday and Sunday night we will be staying in Morro Bay and Monday night we'll be staying at a lodge in Cambria.
My great-grandparents retired in Morro Bay, but since my Great-Grandpa Nay passed away before I was born and Grandma Nay moved back to Bakersfield, I never made a trip out there to visit them.
I know there are lots of fun little shops to look at, we have tickets purchased to tour Hearst Castle, and we've found a few other things on Trip Advisor...but if you've been there we're definitely open to suggetions of any MUST-DO things. :)

cynthia and i did the hearst castle tour last time we were there. it was really neat, long, and lots of walking. which tour did you get? i think we did tour #1. other things to see... a few miles north of hearst castle is where the elephant seal estuary is. the little town of harmony (population 18) is full of artsy hippies. the monarch butterfly habitat in pismo. pismo also has a nice marie callendars that overlooks the ocean. also in pismo you can pay to drive out on the sand dunes. morro bay museum of natural history. the sub sea tour in morro bay is "alright". we didn't see anything under the water, but going out on the boat was nice. the town of cayucos is also neat. shopping is similar to morro bay but has also has wooden pier. hope you enjoy your trip! make sure kurt takes some awesome pictures of the rock. i'd like to have one in my house.
I wish we were coming, too. Sounds fun! We loved Hearst Castle. We wished we would have had time to walk around San Luis Obispo - it looked like a fun town. Hope you are feeling better!
kathryn covered most of it. drive as much of the 1 as possible and for surely see the seals. also, the lighthouse right near them, can't remember what it's called. in pismo beach on the main street up from the pier is a local clam chowder place called Splash cafe. best clam chowder ever. greasy...but SO good! not sure if you'll make it there, but if you do...enjoy some for me!
Since I live in SLO, I am quite biased. You must make time to walk around downtown SLO and eat at Firestone Grill. It's located on the corner of Higuera and Osos. The ABC burger is delicious. I also recommend going to Avila Beach. It's the nicest beach in the area. Cory and I enjoy kayaking in the harbor of Morro Bay. Also check out the elephant seals off Highway 1 near Hearst Castle. I would skip out on driving on the dunes in Pismo. Too bad we're going out of town this weekend or I would totally want to get together. We are heading down to OC for a baby blessing. Enjoy your time in the most beautiful part of California.
