Kelsie's Eye Update

We met tonight with the ophthalmologist (next step after the optometrist). Why?

Both of Kelsie's eyes are still very goopy and watery - this is because her tear ducts are clogged. Clogged tear ducts are not uncommon in babies, however most babies out grow this by 12 months. Unfortunately Kelsie's eyes haven't. :(

Dr. Amalo explained a procedure they do to open up the tear ducts, side effects, post-op info, etc. They generally do the procedure between 12-24 months of age. After 24 months the procedure becomes more difficult.

There still is a chance her eyes could clear up on their own....and we hope they do! 12 months of age is just a target age that 90% of babies fall into.

For now we have decided to wait until late February before we schedule a surgery date. Hopefully they'll clear up before then...if not, we'll schedule the surgery for a few months out. Most likely Kelsie will be having surgery this summer...

What a bummer! I hope she doesn't have to have surgery! A friend of mine has a 7-month-old that had the clogged tear ducts but they were so bad they kept getting infected. They did surgery recently and it fixed the problem right away and she said her little one did really well with it. Although it's scary facing a possible surgery, aren't we lucky we can have things like this fixed! Anyway, I hope it all goes well!
