Our future home has to include the following:
- Several different tech related companies. If Kurt ends up losing or hating his job he needs a different company he can work for without picking up and moving far away.
- We don't like EXTREMES in temperature...especially the heat. Let's just say we'd rather have snow than use our A/C everyday. We've been spoiled by the Bay Area weather for the past 3+ years. I'm sorry it just doesn't get better than this.
- Decent to Excellent Schools - Part homeschooling isn't totally out of the question with the way our public school system is going...but I've found parents are more involved, etc. in areas that have good schools. (btw I don't really WANT to homeschool, but if its necessary I would)
- Kurt would also like to live on one of the coasts...this isn't a deal breaker for me, but I like the beach.
- I told Kurt that I would move anywhere in the US if he made enough $ to fly me home when I wanted. :)
- Affordable housing would be nice, but we do have a sizeable downpayment...so if the salary matches the market we're good (i.e. we actually could afford to buy something in the bay area right now...that's not why we're moving).
Realisticly, in the past week we've looked into Massachusetts, Raleigh (talk about extremes in temp!), Enumclaw/Buckley (outside Seattle), and San Diego. Enumclaw/Buckley is winning as of now.

Raleigh totally doesn't have extremes in temp. You get one or two dustings of snow a year. The summer can be warm and humid, but I live 5 hours south of Raleigh right now and we're roasting. I'm closer to Florida than NC. There are palm trees outside.
As for Raleigh, there are a TON of tech companies, a temple, two stakes, great schools if you live in Wake county, very affordable housing (you could buy a mansion), 2 hrs to the beach, 4 to the mountains, etc... it has a lot of perks, but it's a two hour flight to ORD and 3 to SLC.
Personally, we're looking to moving to the mountains next. It's been nice living 30 min from the beach, but it'd be fun to live in the mountains next.
ENUMCLAW, ENUMCLAW!!! Do you know how close that is to me?! Yay for Enumclaw. ;)
san diego is an AWESOME idea. i was totally gonna suggest that but i remember kurt shutting the idea down years ago. :) dave actually works for a company that is always hiring in IT and computers. not sure exactly where kurt's focus is...but just fyi. :) there's lots of jobs in the industry in san diego and orange county though. and the commute isn't too bad. schools are pretty good down here (not exactly my expertise at this point, but i hear mostly good things in a lot of areas) rancho bernardo and that area are all way family friendly and moderately coastal. :) i also know a good realtor if you needed help (my dad) fyi. :) good luck!
You've done the west coast, time to try east and southern; Raleigh is about 45 mins. east from us...good shopping for Rachel and not too far from the beach. Plus you can learn an entirely new language here. I still don't know what people are saying most of the time ;)
Did you say why OR is out of the picture? I can't remember why if you've mentioned it.
Being someone who has lived near both coasts I have to say that people are so friendly in the South. Even though I was only in SC for 7 years I often miss the beautiful places and friendly people. That being said, I love LOVE the Pacific NW. For me it comes down to staying somewhere near family once he's done w/ school.
