Remodel Work

So when we purchased our home it came with this huge white built-in entertainment center that separated the family room from the dining room.  To say we weren't fans was to put it mildly.  Besides the fact that it was huge and bulky our TV would not fit inside.

We decided that as soon as we moved in we'd tear it out and put in a banister/railing.  We had some contractors come and bid on the project, but they wanted ridiculous amounts of money to do it.  Then Kurt's parents let us know they wanted to come visit and Craig saved the day!  Kurt's dad (Craig) is a very gifted/retired contractor.  He agreed to help Kurt with the project, but ended up doing it mostly by himself since Kurt had minimal time off.
As you can tell he did a great job and it turned out beautiful!  I am sure it is way better than the local contractor would have done it.  We love it!
This week the carpet people came and patched the carpet to finish off the project.  It doesn't match perfectly, but I still think it looks pretty darn good.  The whole remodel makes the dining room and family room feel so much bigger.

From Kurt:

Dad was definitely the brains and much of the brawn behind the work on this project. While I did manage to do the tear-out on my own and some of the pre-work, Dad brought a ton of his tools and all the experience of a seasoned professional to the task. It was great working with him again on something we both used to do together. We really appreciated his time, effort, and walk down construction memory lane.
Also, I've never coped a baseboard to a newel post base trim and nose board before, much less with nothing but a chop saw. My three attempts failed miserably and Dad's was perfect on his first try. Amazing.
I also think Dad gave the mill yards a run for their money when he hand-planed the edges of the nose plate! All that airplane building experience definitely came through on that one.

Kurt and the kids were watching squirrels out the window, so Kurt decided to turn the couch around so they could watch out the window easier. :)

That looks way better. Good job kurt and kurts dad! I was wondering why the couch was turned around and then you read my thoughts and answered my question.
